How Virtual Learning Helped Emily-Brooke and Her Family Thrive
When Emily-Brooke and her family made the switch to Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF) in 2019, they were seeking a new start, one that would enable her to learn in a supportive environment after facing challenges in the traditional classroom. Now a sixth-grader, Emily-Brooke has found not only academic success, but confidence, community and creativity through online learning.
“I was getting bullied at my old school and didn’t want to go through that again,” Emily-Brooke said. “I agreed with online schooling, and now I really love it.”
Learning That Fits Family Life
For Anthony and Christina, Emily-Brooke’s parents, the move to virtual learning has been a game-changer. Between running a small business and managing health challenges, the family needed an educational option that worked with their lifestyle, not against it.
“A lot of people see virtual school as a challenge because your child is at home with you,” said Anthony. “But in reality, it’s incredibly flexible. She’s been able to keep her grades up and even learn about entrepreneurship by helping with our business.”
DAOF allows the family to balance school, work, and quality time. And for Emily-Brooke, it means more freedom in her schedule.
“I like that I can finish school early and go with Mommy to help with shopping,” she shared. “And I get to start summer earlier than other kids!”
Teachers Who Feel Like Friends – and Family
One of the biggest differences Emily-Brooke noticed since joining DAOF is the support she receives from her teachers.
“Every year, they’re like family,” she said. “They’re so nice and always help when you need it. It feels really personal.”
Her current favorite class is reading with teacher Ms. Price.
“I like that we read stories, and she picks cute, seasonal activities for our lessons,” Emily-Brooke said.
Looking Towards the Future
Outside of academics, Emily-Brooke’s interests shine through her art and faith. She loves painting, glitter crayons, and listening to Joy FM, a Christian radio station that’s inspired her future goals.
“I’ve really been wanting to work for Joy FM and be an artist from home,” she said.
DAOF’s online classes also give her time to explore clubs and new hobbies, including the school’s Minecraft Club through K12 Zone.
A Message for Other Families
For parents or students considering virtual school, the family hopes their story encourages others to explore their options.
“You don’t have to go through it alone,” said Christina. “We’ve seen such a difference in Emily-Brooke. She’s happier, more confident, and thriving. There are other options that really focus on your child and help them succeed.”
Emily-Brooke agrees.
“I think it’s important to share my story, so other kids know they don’t have to stay somewhere they’re unhappy,” she said. “You can find support online and you can find friends who care.”
