Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Twinkal Christie, Health Science teacher

Stories & Spotlights
DAOF Teacher

From hospital labs to high school classrooms, Ms. Twinkal Christie is an invaluable member of the Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF) team.

With over 18 years of experience in medical laboratories, hospitals, research facilities, and reference labs, Christie brings real-world expertise to her classroom. She holds a degree in medical laboratory science and is licensed in multiple areas, including microbiology, chemistry, and pathology.

Before joining us at DAOF, she taught at the college level, focusing on medical laboratory assisting and phlebotomy.

The High School Medical Pathway

Now, as a health science teacher at DAOF, Christie guides her students through a rigorous pathway to a possible medical career. She teaches tenth, 11th, and 12th graders in three progressive courses:

  • Health Science I: Introduction to medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Health Science II / Allied Health Professionalism: Covers foundations of healthcare, HIPAA, and industry regulations.
  • Health Science III (Senior Year): Prepares students for industry certifications and career readiness – including CMAA (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant) and CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician).

Earning College-Level Certifications at No Cost

By the time they graduate, Christie’s students are able to earn two certifications in the medical field: Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) and Certified Phlebotomy Technician.

“These are the same certifications that college level students often pay thousands of dollars for,” Christie explains. “My students get them completely free while still in high school. It’s a huge head start.”

Once certified and at least 18-years-old, students are qualified to work in hospitals, reference laboratories, clinics, and doctors’ offices, often before even stepping foot on a college campus.

Setting High Expectations and Supporting Students to Meet Them

Christie is very open with her students about the hard work that is required to succeed in the medical field. Student accountability and responsibility play a vital role in their success.

“Certification exams are no joke,” she says. “These exams are set at an adult level, people in their 30’s and above are taking then. But my students are rising to the challenge.”

To support them, she brings creativity and resourcefulness to her teaching. Without access to physical clinicals, she demonstrates procedures using a personal mannequin arm and teaches students to practice safe techniques at home. An alternative practice tool for students? Bananas.

Bridging the Gap

After passing their certification exams, students have a 90-day window to gain hands-on experience. Christie encourages them to volunteer or shadow professionals at local hospitals, clinics, or labs.

“We want them to be able to say, ‘I passed my certification exam. I have the knowledge. Now I just need some hands-on experience,’” she says. “That’s exactly what we’re working to provide.”

Working to Meet the Demand

Christie’s work is now more important than ever.

“After COVID, the healthcare field needs people in every area, from the front desk to the lab to surgery,” she says. “Our students are part of that solution.”

She reminds her students that they’re not just earning a diploma but they’re graduating with credentials that put them on the path to a meaningful career.

Ms. Christie knows exactly what it takes to succeed in healthcare because she’s experienced it. Now, she’s using that experience to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.

With passionate educators like her leading the way, the future of healthcare is in very good hands.
