From Challenge to Confidence: Subi’s Journey at Digital Academy of Florida

Stories & Spotlights

When Subi and her mother, Shenell, moved from Connecticut to Florida, they didn’t expect their educational journey to lead to virtual learning. But after discovering they would be placed at different schools in their district, Shenell made the decision to leave her role as an ESE paraprofessional to prioritize staying close and connected to Subi’s education.

Subi was initially introduced to the idea of virtual learning during the COVID-19 shutdown, but not due to parental choice.

Then, they discovered Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF). Shenell was determined to find a supportive environment where Subi could truly thrive …  and thrive she has.

Rising to the Challenge

Subi was initially introduced to the idea of virtual learning during the COVID-19 shutdown, but not due to parental choice.

At first, the switch to virtual school came with a few challenges.

“It was definitely an adjustment,” Shenell said. “A new routine, a different way of switching classes, and a lot of note-taking.”

But with the support and encouragement of her teachers and school staff, Subi quickly found her rhythm. She began attending help sessions, tutoring opportunities, and socials – earning the nickname “Trader Joe’s Sticker Queen” for decorating her notebooks after each completed assignment.

Now entering her senior year, Subi is a straight-A student with big dreams and an even bigger passion for science.

A Budding Botanist

Subi has her heart set on becoming a botanist. Inspired by PBS shows like “Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum,” she developed a curiosity about plants, bugs, and nature. Her favorite subject is science, and she takes every opportunity to learn more – through webinars, community events, or hands-on experiments at home.

“She discovered this path all on her own,” Shenell said proudly. “No one suggested botany to her. She found it, and she’s never looked back.”

Subi is currently on a medical science track and looking at ways to continue her studies after graduation, including dual enrollment and future studies at Tallahassee State College or Florida A&M University.

Learning Without Limits

What makes Subi’s story even more inspiring is the perseverance she showed during one of her family’s most difficult times. Not long after switching to DAOF, Shenell and Subi lost everything – their home and car – and were temporarily homeless.

Even while living in hotels, Subi never missed a day of school.

“We were getting support from her teachers, the school social worker, and administrators,” Shenell recalled. “Subi didn’t give up. She stayed in school, and she kept going.”

From the Virtual Classroom to the Florida Capitol

DAOF has also helped Subi and her mom become advocates for school choice. After meeting school choice representatives at a school-sponsored event, Subi and Shenell were invited to visit the Florida State Capitol to share their story with legislators. They toured the building, met with Florida Senator Burgess’ legislative aide, and highlighted how school choice and virtual learning made a difference in their lives.

That visit – and the lessons shared by Subi – left such an impression that they’ve been invited back to share more.

Looking Ahead

As Subi begins her senior year, she continues to explore new interests and hobbies. She enjoys movies, animals, roller skating, and science-themed activities – including science night at her church’s vacation Bible school (where she wears her own lab coat and safety goggles). One of her favorite stuffed animals even wears matching leg braces, just like Subi’s.

.         .

“I’m just really excited for what’s next,” Shenell said. “This experience has opened so many doors for her. If we can do it, anybody can.”

Subi and Shenell’s journey is a reminder that education doesn’t have to follow a traditional path to be powerful. With the right support – and plenty of determination – students like Subi can overcome challenges and build a future full of possibilities.
