Teen Tackles Entrepreneurship Classes with Big Dreams

According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, entrepreneurship is on the rise. In fact, the nation has seen a 50 percent increase in new business applications in 2024 compared to 2019.

Developing small ideas into working businesses 

Oscar isn’t just learning about entrepreneurship at DAOF—he’s living it. Oscar has not one, but three businesses he’s been growing over the past several years: 

  1. He runs the Miami branch of his family-owned, e-commerce business that ships goods to Paraguay. 
  1. He operates his own electronics repair business. 
  1. He is a self-published author of three books in Spanish, offering parenting advice from a kid’s perspective. 

Oscar says DAOF’s adaptable, career-focused education model is a perfect fit for him, allowing him to balance school with his entrepreneurial ventures. He can fulfill online orders, tweak customers’ broken electronics, and refine his writing—all while staying on track with his coursework. 

“I like to grow things—the acorn is a big symbol in my family, reminding us that big things come from small seeds,” Oscar says. 

DAOF entrepreneurship teacher Maritza G. believes Oscar is on the right track to achieving his goals. “By equipping students with entrepreneurial skills, I believe they can lead innovation that fuels economic growth in our local communities and helps shape the future.” 

Oscar’s story highlights the power of hands-on, career-focused education. Whether a student wants to start a business, learn a trade, or pursue a technical career, CTE programs help build the skills and confidence to succeed in the ever-changing workforce.
