How One Ninth Grader Thrives at Digital Academy of Florida
As a brand-new high school student, Tawa is stepping into her freshman year with confidence, curiosity, and a deep love of learning. After joining Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF) in second grade, she’s grown up in the virtual model, and continues to choose it because it works.
“I really like how everything is set up – it just fits me,” says Tawa.
Her mother agrees, reflecting on how the virtual environment has supported both of her daughters academically, socially, and emotionally over the years.
A Family’s Journey to Virtual Learning
The family began exploring online learning years ago, searching for an option that offered tailored, individualized learning, and a safe, supportive environment.
“We wanted something that wasn’t the typical public-school experience,” Tawa’s mom shared. “From the beginning, I wanted to be involved in their education. We wanted a model that gave them time to learn at their own pace and grow in a healthy environment.”
Over time, the reasons only deepened.
“The more we stayed, the more we liked it,” she added. “As the girls got older, I noticed how independent and self-disciplined they’ve become. It’s been incredible to see how they’ve grown.”
A Model That Fits a Busy Family
A major factor in the family’s decision to stay with DAOF has been adaptability – especially as a family with a busy schedule.
With both parents working remotely and frequent travel woven into their lives, the ability to log into school from anywhere has been a game-changer.
“We really like the flexibility of doing school anywhere,” her mom said. “It gives us freedom as a family, and the girls never fall behind because of travel or schedule changes.”
Tawa loves this just as much.
“One thing I really like about online school is that I can plan my own schedule,” she said. “I don’t like having a lot of work at the end of the week, so I spread things out and make Fridays easier.”
“Learning” to Learn Independently
Because she has grown up in virtual school, Tawa has developed the skills to manage her day, stay organized, and keep herself on track.
“I find it pretty easy to work on my own,” she said. “If I don’t understand something, I ask my parents, or I go back and watch the lesson recordings. That really helps.”
Her mother sees this independence as one of the biggest strengths of virtual education.
“We treat online school like a regular classroom – wake up early, follow a routine, stay consistent,” she explained. “Because of that discipline, they’ve become incredibly self-motivated. I don’t have to wake them up or remind them about work. They take responsibility for their learning.”
She added, “People think virtual school means you’re spoon-feeding your kids. But it’s actually the opposite – my daughters are some of the most independent learners I know.”
Connecting Through Clubs, Classes and More
Despite the misconception that virtual learning lacks social opportunities, Tawa stays busy with school activities.
She’s part of the Chit Chat Club, has joined Business Professionals of America (BPA), and regularly attends teacher help sessions and live classes. “I love the clubs,” Tawa says excitedly!
Her mom appreciates the in-person outings DAOF hosts as well.
“We really enjoyed the school bowling event – they had a great turnout,” she said. “The students really benefit from getting together.”
Exploring Her Interests – and Her Future
Last year, Tawa took an entrepreneurship course that required her to develop a business idea. She created a beauty salon specializing in curly hair – a concept inspired by styling her own and her sister’s hair.
“I love doing my sister’s hair, so I thought, why not make that my project?” she said. “Most salons focus on straight hair, and curly hair salons are hard to find and expensive.”
The project sparked a real interest.
“After the class, I actually started thinking about working at a salon one day, maybe as a part-time job,” she said.
She’s also excited about exploring more science-based pathways as she moves through high school.
“I’ve always been into science and math,” she said. “I’m hoping to take more classes in that direction.”
Looking Ahead with Confidence
For Tawa and her family, Digital Academy of Florida has been more than just a school – it’s been a place where both daughters feel supported, challenged and empowered to chart their own path.
“We really enjoy online school. I don’t think we could do it any other way,” her mom said. “It’s given my girls independence, confidence, and a safe place to grow – and that means everything.”
