From Service to the Classroom:

Stories & Spotlights

DAOF Teacher Alarna Mayberry’s Journey from Army Specialist to Educator

At Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF), we’re proud to have educators who bring a wealth of diverse experiences into our virtual classrooms. Alarna Mayberry, a former Army Specialist and Army Reservist, is one of those inspiring teachers. Alarna’s journey has taken her from military service around the world to a position where she shapes young minds. Her unique perspective and commitment to service offer a valuable lens on both life and learning, which she now shares with her students.

Finding Inspiration in Family and a Life of Service

Alarna’s decision to join the military was inspired by her family, particularly her two uncles who served in the armed forces. She admired their achievements and saw a path that would allow her to travel, meet new people, and learn more about the world. Enlisting as a Patient Administration Specialist (71G), Alarna served actively from 1996 to 1999 and then continued in the Army Reserves until 2000.

An Unforgettable Mission in Haiti

Among her memories, one stands out: serving on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti, where she met Captain Cannington, a leader who profoundly influenced her life. “He shared his challenges and successes in college, and that encouraged me to attend college,” Alarna recalls. Her time in Haiti wasn’t just about service; it was a transformative experience that shaped her future and her view on education.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Lifelong Friendships

One of the most challenging aspects of Alarna’s military service was the distance from family. Though difficult, the experience strengthened her resilience and allowed her to forge meaningful, lifelong friendships. These friends became her support system, helping her persevere through the hardships of separation and making every visit home a rewarding reminder of her journey’s purpose and accomplishments.

Advice for Students Considering the Military

For students contemplating a future in the military, Alarna offers practical and heartfelt advice: “Prepare for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam,” she advises. “A high score can open doors to a range of career options within the military, allowing you to choose a path that aligns with your interests and goals.” Her guidance reflects her understanding of both the challenges and opportunities in military service, as well as her commitment to helping students succeed.

A Lasting Legacy of Service and Leadership

Alarna Mayberry’s journey from Army Specialist to DAOF teacher is a story of dedication, resilience, and lifelong learning. Her experiences remind us that education and service go hand in hand, enriching not only our own lives but also the lives of those we serve.
