How Digital Academy of Florida is Changing Lives

Stories & Spotlights
Joey at DAOF

For Joni, mornings used to begin with heartbreak.

Once a bright and curious boy, her son Joey dreaded school. He cried getting ready, cried getting off the bus, and came home defeated. Third grade was especially hard: poor grades, little teacher support, and even a traumatic incident at school.

“I was watching him disappear,” Joni recalls.

Everything changed when a friend recommended the Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF). Skeptical at first – was a free online school too good to be true? – Joni decided to give it a try and enrolled Joey.

It was like flipping a switch.

“He went from completely defeated to thriving,” she says. “Now he wakes up excited. He wants to learn.”

Learning What Works for Him

Previously, the stress of the classroom had crushed his confidence, and he earned D’s and F’s. Within months at DAOF, he was earning straight A’s and even scored 20 points higher on his state test.

The shift wasn’t just academic. Joey now feels understood. He receives IEP (Individualized Education Program) support in reading and math, learns at his own pace, and replays lessons when needed. His teachers even encourage alternative problem-solving methods that actually make sense to him.

“He finally stopped thinking he was stupid,” Joni says. “He started believing in himself.”

The Freedom to Learn – Anywhere

The flexibility of online learning has transformed daily life for the family. Joey can attend Taekwondo, swimming lessons, and even travel without missing class. Whether it’s a dentist appointment or a family cruise, the virtual classroom works around their life – not the other way around.

“He did school between ports in Cozumel and Roatán,” Joni says. “His teacher said, ‘That’s a better education than a worksheet anyway.’”

Joey now learns from the comfort of his own room and the stress of school mornings is gone. With more time together, the whole family is closer, calmer, and happier.

A Life-Saving Change

Joey’s transformation has been nothing short of miraculous.

“Had we not found this school, I honestly think Joey would have ended up depressed. Maybe worse,” Joni admits. “I believe this saved his life.”

Now headed into fourth grade, Joey is no longer the sad, withdrawn child who dreaded school. He’s engaged, joyful, and thriving. He jokes about school, participates in class, and feels safe to be himself.

“He’s so helpful, always asking if he can help his teachers,” Joni says. “He just needed people who saw him.”

She’s even inspired friends to consider online school for their own children – especially those who, like Joey, were falling through the cracks in traditional systems.

“It’s 2025,” she says. “We have options now. It doesn’t hurt to try.”

Sharing Joey’s Story

Before sharing their story, Joni asked Joey how he felt. His answer was clear: “Tell them.”

He wants other kids to know it can – and does – get better. There is a place where they can learn, feel safe, and be themselves.

“He just needed people who saw him,” Joni says.

And now? They do.
