Capturing Creativity: Meet Gianna, Winner of the K12 Art Competition
When Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF) seventh grader Gianna decided – almost on a whim – to enter the K12 photography competition, she never expected her submission to win. What started as a fun activity with her younger sister and best friend turned into an award-winning moment that her whole family celebrates.
“I just thought the sky looked pretty, and I told my little sister to put on something colorful,” Gianna explained. “She was my model.”
For Gianna, the competition wasn’t about the award – it was about experimenting with something new. Her mother, Regina, wasn’t surprised by her daughter’s talent.
“She’s always loved taking pictures and videos,” Regina shared. “It was funny because she entered the contest so casually – then she won!”
A Family Flourishing in Virtual Education
Gianna’s family joined DAOF during the height of the pandemic in 2021, but Regina had been curious about at-home schooling options long before. With four children – including two DAOF graduates – virtual learning quickly became the right fit for their lifestyle.
“The biggest benefit is adaptability,” Regina said. “We can travel, do anything. As long as we have internet access, they can stay on track.”
Gianna agrees.
“I like having my own schedule,” she said. “I can do my homework before or between classes, and I’ve gotten good at managing my time.”
That independence has been one of the most valuable – and sometimes challenging – parts of virtual education. Gianna admits that staying focused at home can be tricky, especially in tougher subjects like math. But having the option to rewatch recorded lessons helps her review and understand concepts she might miss the first time.
“Sometimes it takes me a while to understand things,” she said. “Being able to go back and rewatch lessons helps.”
Regina appreciates the support from DAOF teachers as well.
“The teachers are very communicative,” she said. “If something is missing, if a grade drops, if a class is skipped, they contact me right away.”
What’s Next
Gianna’s award-winning photo is just one example of how she’s growing in confidence, creativity, and independence. Whether she continues exploring photography or finds a new interest through DAOF clubs, her family is proud of the path she’s forging.
“We’re super proud of her,” Regina said. “Virtual school has given her the space to try new things and figure out what she loves.”
We can’t wait to see what is next for you, Gianna!
