Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Change: Carters Incredible Journey

Stories & Spotlights
Carter

Carter, a 13-year-old entrepreneur and autism advocate, is rewriting the story of what it  means to make a difference. As an eighthh grader at Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF),  Carter’s dedication to both his business, Spectrum Golf, and his community is motivating  others to embrace their unique abilities and pursue their passions.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Strengths

Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome before turning one, Carter faced many social and  academic struggles early in life, including bullying and teasing. However, with the right  support system, Carter turned his challenges into opportunities. A turning point came  when he transitioned to DAOF, an online school that provided the support he needed to  succeed.

“Before coming to Digital Academy of Florida, my journey with Autism was difficult, I was  bullied, teased, and more, but now, thanks to all the support I’ve received, I view Autism as  my superpower,” Carter shared. “Since transitioning to DAOF, I have found passion  through golf, being an entrepreneur through my own business, Spectrum Golf, giving back  to my community, and sharing my journey of Autism across the country and around the  world.”

Championing Autism Awareness Through Golf

Carter found comfort and success in golf, where he plays for the Junior LPGA. His love for  the sport became an inspiration for Spectrum Golf, a company that promotes Autism  awareness and provides high-quality golf apparel. In spring 2024, Carter hosted the First  Annual Autism Awareness Golf Tournament at The Country Club of Coral Springs. More  than 50 golfers participated, raising funds and awareness for his nonprofit organization  dedicated to supporting neurodiversity.

This landmark event showcased Carter’s leadership and ability to rally his community. His  entrepreneurial spirit, combined with his advocacy for Autism, has made him a role model  for young people everywhere. The event will return next year in April hoping to recreate the  same effect.

Recognition and Inspiration

Carter’s achievements have earned him national recognition. In 2022, he was named  Sports Illustrated’s SportsKid of the Year, a testament to his hard work and impact on  others.

His mother, Dr. Thelma Tennie, credits DAOF for providing the environment that allowed  Carter to flourish. “Fast-forward years after enrolling at Digital Academy of Florida, my son  is excelling in school and his personal life! This school has been everything we needed,  from support from his teachers for both Carter and me, to the flexibility he needed to  pursue his passions,” she said.
