Student Spotlight: Meet Ruth, People’s Choice Winner of “My K12 Reel Me” Competition

We are excited to introduce you to Ruth, a 7th grader at Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF), who has a lot to celebrate! She recently earned the People’s Choice Award in the “My K12 Reel Me” competition with an impressive 134 public votes for her video submission. Finding Her Footing – Virtually

Ruth, who lives in Jacksonville, has been a student with DAOF for three years. After moving from the traditional classroom setting, she found that online learning offered her the structure, support, and flexibility she needed.

“At first, I was nervous because I’d never done virtual school before, but the transition was really nice. The teachers sent me all my materials, answered my questions, and helped me get comfortable.”

Ruth appreciates that DAOF allows her to work at her own pace while staying organized. She uses both the school’s digital calendar and her own paper planner to structure her day.

“The classes aren’t too early, and there are plenty of breaks in between. I plan what I do so I’m not just sitting at the computer all day.”

A Love of Learning

Ruth enjoys all of her classes, but science and English stand out as favorites.

“I love reading, and English helps me become more confident with reading out loud. In science, I love experimenting with things, especially when they send us materials for at-home projects.”

Her favorite experiment so far? Testing which objects sink or float using rockets and beakers. Outside of school, Ruth enjoys creating online art, using visual templates, and learning online tools like Canva. She also loves music (K-pop is a favorite) and has a passion for reading.

Looking Toward the Future

Inspired by her love of science and helping others, Ruth is already thinking about her career goals and dreams of becoming a nurse, specifically working with children.

“I’ve been thinking about being a nurse, probably a pediatric nurse, because I’m really good with kids. I love helping people, and I have a little sister who’s two, so I enjoy interacting with children.”

Creativity for the Win

Winning the People’s Choice Award is just one example of Ruth’s creativity and dedication. From her strong academic performance to her growing list of personal interests, she’s a shining example of what’s possible at Digital Academy of Florida.

“This competition gave me a chance to share my schedule and show people how virtual school works for me. I’m so glad I entered.”
