Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Patty Stewart

At the Digital Academy of Florida (DAOF), our educators inspire, advocate, and transform students’ lives. Mrs. Patty Stewart, an Exceptional Student Education (ESE)/Access Points teacher at DAOF, was recently nominated for the “Excellence in Action” award by one of her students – an honor that speaks volumes about the impact she’s made.
A Journey Fueled by Purpose
Originally pursuing a career in music education, Mrs. Stewart’s path shifted after a serious car accident. She went on to earn a degree in psychology and spent 14 years working at Disney World as a certified forensic interviewer and security investigator.
“I really wanted to be a teacher,” she shares. “Before moving to Florida, I worked as a vocational instructor for adults with disabilities. I always knew I wanted to work in special education.”
Her passion is personal. Her brother is twice exceptional – both gifted and on the autism spectrum – and watching her mother advocate for him lit a fire in her heart.
“Back then, they didn’t even have a name for what he was going through. Eventually, it was called Asperger’s, but there were so many challenges. My mother fought for him to get the support he needed, and that fight inspired me.”
Making a Virtual Impact
After working as a teaching assistant and later a classroom teacher in Lake County, Stewart made the transition to virtual education during the pandemic. She taught students who chose to stay home during the COVID lockdown – a role that prepared her for joining DAOF in 2022.
“Some students really thrive in this environment. They’re able to focus better, feel safer, and engage with technology in amazing ways.”
Now in her seventh year of teaching, Stewart uses her past experience and professional insight to support students in unique and transformative ways.
Why Virtual Works for Exceptional Students
As an ESE and Access Points teacher, Stewart helps students build confidence, develop skills, and navigate their education in a setting that fits their needs.
“Every student is different. For some, a virtual environment can be life-changing. Whether they need a quieter space, want to move at their own pace, or feel safer learning from home, this model gives them what they need.”
Stewart’s love for her students is evident in every word she speaks. Her work is a powerful reminder of why school choice matters, and why dedicated educators like her make all the difference.
“They’re awesome. I love my students.”
